At six years old, we - my friends and I, I'm not making any supposition about you :) - were "playing doctor," and the adults just looked the other way; it was considered a normal stage of development. Hugging and kissing on the cheek were positively encouraged as being sociable.
When my students look like they need/want hugs, I ask if they would like one, and I always make sure there are witnesses whose names I know. Because it's not that we need a society where acts of affection are suspect; it's that we have one.
