Tempting as it may be, never shake it while the wax is still liquid. It'll get full of these terrible air bubbles that will never go away.
My lava lamp is fucked for life.

i did that to my sparkly lava lamp when I was a kidlit. it was the most amazing thing- purple and blue lava with sparkly water... ahhhh...
