Home from VVC! And humid. And being scolded by Tigger for being gone.
I have every intention of writing up the vids that I enjoyed from individual shows, but my body clock is completely screwed and I promised that I'd put up my notes from vid review and in-depth, so here's what you're getting today. Below are notes from in-depth. I'll hopefully get to full vid review tomorrow.
ETA: Updated with links to BOTH vids.
In-Depth Vid Review
This review session was led by
millylicious and
absolut3destiny.
Marble House -
hollywoodgrrl (Doctor Who)
LINK(me: definitely go watch, even if you don't read everything below)
They asked first for perception from people who don't watch DW.
- Interesting bookend with war
- Think he's immortal and has relationship with these women and with human horribleness through time
Someone said that it took her until second viewing to get why the war footage was there.
millylicious didn't fully realize how important that footage was to the overall theme until another viewing.
taraljc pointed out that the Doctor himself not in vid much, it's more from John Smith and Martha's POVs.
sisabet, who hasn't seen the show, did take particular note of Martha as a servant. She also got the framing and emphasis on WWI (and was very proud of herself when we said she was right).
thuviaptarth saw the meaning as humans attempting to be immortal, through Martha and the kid with the watch
millylicious pointed out that we had lots of vids in premieres with text, and she felt that this was one that worked, where the text was integral with the motion of the vid (note: at one point in the intro, the text scrolls across the bottom from left to right, fading out as new text scrolls in across the top.)
laurashapiro thinks the quotes are used from Smith's journal.
vonnie_k found the quotes in the intro distracting, and didn't feel they worked as well as the ones in the middle of the vid
pipsqueaky liked the text on first viewing, but caught this time that the scrolling was the expression of humans' need for Doctor
thuviaptarth felt the positioning of the text didn't work.
They then showed part of another Doctor Who vid as contrast. This one relied even heavier on text, but also gave the text far more graphical treatment.
astolat wanted more of that kind of graphical text in Marble House.
Re: the choice to use archival footage:
- made what was going on in the vid real
- clear choice to use outside footage along with the WWI footage that the show filmed made it more real/horrendous
- nostalgia for the past Britannia (seen on the tank)
-
jackiekjono mentioned the meta discussions that happened at the time the eps aired about why the TARDIS choose this time to put the Doctor and Martha when they went into hiding, and she feels that the vid makes it clearer that it's because the kids.
Give It Up -
jarrow (multi)
LINK(me: omg, go watch this now now now)
This is the first time that we've done a Club Vivid vid in in-depth. So we started out with what makes good CV vid:
-
jackiekjono pointed out that it's not as stressful a process to create because it's just for fun without being analyzed or reviewed (USUALLY)
-
absolut3destiny agreed that there's a difference between sitting down being analytical vs funfunfun
-
laurashapiro said song choice is a big thing, because usually if someone doesn't know the song, they won't automatically dance; also, the vid must be kinetic and get us moving
Getting onto the vid,
absolut3destiny wanted to talk about layering: Theme, Structure, Content
laurashapiro's response: I know this! I love this! And everyone in the vid is dancing, so we're all going to rock out, but the vid works harder than, because it brings in the fight against The Man
absolut3destiny pointed out the use of the choruses to punctuate the love of dance
taraljc noted the difference of tone between Ferris Bueller's Day Off vs Footloose, but one other person thought was all same movie, so kudos to John on working them all together
Putting in the extra effort of unifying all the movies under a theme makes this vid more than just throwing nostalgia on screen
sisabet thinks the people in the vid go from rebel to leader
absolut3destiny at first thought the clip of the air guitar at the beginning didn't fit, but then realized that achieving dance is usually metaphor for growth, and in this vid there's dancing from start, so it's really about the type of dance - going from private performance to public, and passing it on to everyone
thuviaptarth looked at the vid as ensemble, so felt it was was individual rebelling and dancing to group rebelling and dancing
Pointed out the bridge with the full on rebellion to dark tunnel to jumping out into world
absolut3destiny noted that this is the third CV vids by John - Paul McCartney, Good and this, which all both together
He also felt that this vid was about people changing the world through their dancing
par_avion read the air guitar opening as inviting the audience to join in
Noted by someone that the music is much more recent than source, but the issues are always relevant, and the moment that really nails that is the stroller-dancing baby
jackiekjono said that for a generation, after Mr Rogers, John Hughes was the first to get us again
I think that's it. If I messed up the attribution on anything, let me know. And as I said, I'll update with the Doctor Who vid link as soon as I can.
