It's politics. In my opinion, a lot of politics boils down to irrational screaming because, in order to pass laws, people have to get sufficiently worked up about something to want to force their opinions on others. Likewise, to prevent laws from being passed, the "con" people also have to get sufficiently worked up to counteract all the worked-up "pro" people.
