Try "Geek Love." Don't remember the author's name off-hand, and it's not historical, but it's about carnival sideshow "freaks" and I thought it was a really good read. Disturbing, but good. And not any more disturbing than some of the other books on your list. :)

The problem is that I've already read and adored Geek Love! :) But that is the exact sort of thing I'm looking for, yes. Dark + carnival = happy me. I've never been quite sure why.
