Everybody has to learn how to fail. I honestly think it's an easier lesson if you get it while you're young. I won't say because there is less ego tied up in it, but one definitely has more support and resilience doing it at age 10 instead of age 30.
I say this as somebody who was academically the smartest (or at least in the top three) person in the room for most of my school life - and then I hit University and I was just another student and nowhere near the top. It was *hard* and I did not take it well. In retrospect I think it would have been easier for me if I had been dealing with it as a child, instead of in my 20s.

It doesn't make it any less fraught, I'm sure. But he has you all to offer moral support no matter what happens.
