L Word gives us . . . The Lipstick Transman

Dec 30, 2006 18:04

Yes, I watch too much TV. I was on the Showtime Network web site and happened to see that The LWord, the "lesbian" drama series/soap opera, is starting a new season of episodes next Sunday night. That show is like a trainwreck. I can't look away. And yet it is almost a guilty pleasure--without much pleasure, and some guilt around not spending that ( Read more... )

I don't get Showtime, so I have never seen this program, but, looking at the cast list on the linked page, I would have put all of the characters as supermodels and not lesbians or trans folk. sheesh!

The web site is totally goofy! The show does have it moments of interest and I think their intentions are decent, but that is generally outweighed by the near-misses or ginormous screw ups in depicting queer life.

It was my pleasure to have a fleeting moment to get up close and personal w/you. Please do get in touch when you expect to be back in DC and maybe we can pick up where we left off.

That page is so bizarre. I can't decide what to make of that photo. I think the character is going to prove to be a disservice to transmen. It was nice that the L Word showed there are such things as non-hypermasculine lesbians (a guy on a GLBT board I moderate recently asked "are all lesbians dogs, or are there pretty ones too?"), but they are still too scared to put an actual butch woman on the show. They wouldn't do it with Shane, and now they're taking it a step further and not letting a transman be masculine either. Everybody on the show is femme, including the butches and transmen. I find that not at all cool, I guess.

That said, though, I will probably start downloading the episodes so I can drool all over Marlee Matlin.

So, on the first episode of the season, the trans character Max actually went to an FTM support group and there were very realistic-looking FTMs in the scene "sharing" aobu their lives and offering advice to Max about his hideously high T dosage (hence his being an asshole). I figured they basically found a group and filmed a very short scene there. It was an effort--I would give it a B-. No one argued or felt the need to do the support-group-process dance over the advice Max was given (to go to a specific actual doctor for a scrip) and it all took seconds, so it wasn't realistic! Unlike the stoopid web site promo pix, Max looks less feme-y on the show--even has a little facial hair (a cute little soul patch this season--so far). Man I hate this show/can't look away! Speaking of hating a show, I will so not be watching "Fat Like Me" tonight on Lifetime. Argghh ("I want to learn of the pain of the fat girl so I will don a fat suit--ACK--it is so painful I can't wear it for more than one day"--and then I can turn back into a size 2). ( ... )

Yikes, I hadn't heard about that. Right now we are watching the Enterprise marathon on the Sci-Fi channel, but I may have to flip to Lifetime during the commercial breaks just to see how bad it is. I used to be a size 2-4 when I was in college, but now I see those sizes in the store and they look like little girl clothes. It was amusing to try on size 2 at the Chico's outlet this weekend, though! (Their sizing is 0-3 in 0.5 increments, with 0 being - well, 0 - and 3 being 14/16 or something like that.)
