Future!Verse: Giving Up

They had been trying for months. Elizabeth had been doing everything she could possibly think of to be sure that her body wasn't overworked or stressed and yet it hadn't worked. She knew a long time ago that her fertility was questionable. A doctor had once told her that it was going to be difficult for her to get pregnant, or even at all. It ( Read more... )

Monty wasn't sure what - if anything - he could say or do to make their repeated failed attempts any more bearable for Liz. He knew she wanted kids, and once he'd been talked around to the idea himself, it was difficult not to share in her enthusiasm on the subject. But months went by, and there was nothing, and when there finally was something, it was only more bad news. They'd done everything they could. He wasn't sure what else there was to do, if there was anything at all.

While Liz sat out in the backyard and read, Monty - who was home for the weekend, and God bless the fact that there were no classes on the weekends - stayed inside a while, working on a few projects around the house. He got bored of that after a while, though, and wound up fixing up a couple glasses of tea, wandering outside to take one to Liz.

Liz hadn't been paying close enough attention to hear him coming. Only when he was handing her a cup of tea did she look up and give him a quick smile. "Thanks," she said softly. She was pretending to be upbeat. That was the least she could do. There was no need in letting him worry about her when there wasn't anything to be worried about.

She ran through their options again. She'd been taking some fertility drugs, hoping those would help. She'd been eating right and taking care of herself. She'd been doing what she could, but if nature said no, who was she to argue?

Subject change, she decided. "What were you doing?"

He reached over to run a hand through her hair after she'd taken the glass from him, smiling softly down at her. He was fairly certain she was just putting on a brave face, but if that's what she wanted to do, he'd do the same. And he followed her change of subject, although of course he wasn't aware that it was a change of subject. "Manual labor," he answered her, teasingly. "Earnin' my keep."

"Ah, yes," she replied, looking down at her mug, "otherwise I'd have to get rid of you and find a new husband to do manual labor." She teased right back, though it was more on the surface. She hadn't much felt like teasing lately. He always managed to make her feel a bit better though. Even running his hand through her hair was soothing.
