Well, nix the idea of my going on a hiatus!

Just when I think I have nothing to speak of, something occurs that leaves me thinking and pondering for the rest of the day.

Well, it happened this past Saturday, before Easter. It being Easter weekend and the family was home, to amuse myself I decided to watch a movie I had just recently watched: The King and I. I think I've already told you ( Read more... )

This is something I've struggled with with my mom, and to a lesser extent my dad. I think part of the reason is the fact that when our parents grew up it wasn't in an environment that fostered the same kind of imagination we're used to. They simply didn't have access to TV shows and movies like that the way we do. I know both my parents didn't have color TVs until they were young adults, no VHS players or anything- I know they both grew up in religious households, so fantasy and multiculturalism were frowned on anyway ( ... )

This is completely true. Just like your parents, both of my parents were raised in religious households, but the thing is, none of my grandparents have anything against imagination. It's just...I don't know how to explain it...they're indifferent to it, is how I would describe it. But the multicultural thing I also get, too. My Mom grew up in upstate New York where it's basically WASP Paradise up there, and my Dad grew up around here, except that Montgomery County was much more of a rural community then than it is today. There wasn't a whole lot of diversity in their lives, and I can get how they might not understand my fascination about other cultures. I just wish they wouldn't make snide comments about other cultures as well, you know? It makes me mad, because sometimes they'll just throw out some mean comment that completely isn't true, and I can't help but think how they might have a different opinion if they would only try to understand how another culture works ( ... )

Weird is always subjective, so you should never feel weird! And yeah. It's really hard to break the mindset you grow up with, so they probably won't stop with the snide comments anytime soon haha. You just have to tell your mom, "I do what makes me happy. DON'T YOU WANT ME DO BE HAPPY?"

Pssh, are you kidding? Although she sometimes makes me feel bad when she teases me, I love being imaginative! It helps me make sense of this crazy, sometime troubling world, you know what I mean? I do it because it makes me happy, and I think my Mom knows it, too, she just can't help herself sometimes.

THANKS SO MUCH, LYD!!! You made me feel a whole lot better. I told you; you give the best advice. :) I MISS YOU SO MUUUUUUUUUUCH!!!!!

Aw, I'm so sorry, bb! That's really frustrating. One of the greatest things growing up was my mother's imagination because she could always make up stories (well, when she was available ^^), and when I became interested in fantasty/historical fiction/etc. we could talk about it and read books together. BUT, you and your dad have a lot in common, right? Does that include imaginations?

Of course I remember The Royal Diaries series! The Princess Elizabeth book is why I fell in love with history. =)

Yeah, I'm sorry about it, too, to be honest. I think imagination would create a bond with my mother that we don't have right now. I mean, she did read me stories and fairy tales when I was little, but I don't think she took the same joy out of it like I did (and still do, lol!).

AND YES, MY DAD AND I HAVE A LOT IN COMMON! And it includes imagination, thank God! Really, I don't know what I would do without my Dad. He may not read fantasy like I do, but he was more than willing to watch Harry Potter and pretty much every fantasy movie I ever wanted to see (which is hilarious, considering he loves Westerns so much!). HE'S ALSO A HARRY/HERMIONE SHIPPER, DID I EVER TELL YOU THAT? When I showed him Half-Blood Prince, he was like, "Why doesn't Harry get with Hermione? They seem to get along better than she and Ron." LOL, I thought you'd appreciate it.

YAY! I thought I was the only one who still had her Royal Diaries series on her bookshelf! Those books still make me smile, even though most of them are nearly ten years old!
