Phantom of the Opera and Harry Potter

Jul 19, 2009 20:19

The busy weekend is finally wrapping up.

Saturday we saw Phantom of the Opera after driving through a much needed rain storm (even if the downpour was not the most fun to drive in). The woman playing Christine Daae was amazing. Well suited for the role, good vocal range. The gentleman playing the Phantom was a bit disappointing. He's played ( Read more... )

Ack! Warn me before you use that woman's name and Sweeney Todd in the same sentence. It's enough to give a girl a fright! :-)

As far as theatre etiquette, I don't know what the late seating policy that Phantom's management required is (I can find out), but typically in usher land the rule is to seat "in between numbers, preferably during applause." I agree they should not have been seating during Think of Me even if she doesn't sing the entire song.

As far as the food, if the girls concealed it when they entered the room, there is little the ushers could do unless they heard the wrappers, then they should have stopped them. With all this combined, it just seems likely that you had bad ushers. Did you ask the ushers to address it with the girls?

The food itself didn't bother me since they do sell it at the theater, I think it was more the continuation of noise by folks after it had been rather distracting already.

I can understand that. However, most large theatres, even if they sell it, do not allow the actual food in the theatre - I don't know what the policy of the theatre in Houston is though.

I don't think you were being a snob about your very uncouth fellow theatre-goers. That kind of thing drives me BONKERS. In fact, it's a key reason we no longer frequent a certain venue in London. Was this an outdoor theatre, because I didn't know food was allowed at indoor ones?

Indoors at the Hobby Center. They do sell candy at the concession stand. Again, it wasn't the food so much as the added noise that got my attention.

Mrs. Lestrange has a pie shop!. . .
Does a business but I notice something weird.
But lately all her neighbors have disappeared,
Have to hand it to her --
Wot I calls

Makin' Mugglesinto pies!
Wouldn't do at Hogwarts
Just the thought of it's enough to make you sick!
And I'm tellin' you, them muggles sure is quick!

It is not snobbery to ask people to have common courtesy, and peoples' manners have really become awful in theater situations. Of course, as a theater/concert snob myeslf, I'm probably the wrong person to tell you that you are not a snob...

And is it just me and KLR, or did it look like they just transported Helena Bonham-Carter straight from Sweeney Todd?
There is indeed a resemblance. ::grin:: Live long enough with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and it'll rub off on you, i suppose.

Of course, technically, she was Bellatrix LeStrange in Harry Potter before Sweeney Todd.
