Decisions decisions

I received a $500 bonus for enduring my painfully annoying job for 5 years last week.

The rational side of me says that I should use this money to pay bills and such, but I always address found money with this type of practicality, so I was thinking that perhaps this time I would be a little frivolous with it ( Read more... )

If all you play is doom3, get a NV card instead. In general, if all you play are OpenGL apps, NV generally performs better than ATI.

If you play other things... well, it's not so clear-cut. It's pretty much a mix.

Yeah, I know that NV outperforms on d3 by about 15fps. I'm a pretty avid watcher of the benchmarks and specifications so I definitely hear you. In general though, I've been very happy about my ATI and the power requirements on the new NV cards just make me balk.. I mean, come on now, what are the engineers thinking with that kind of a requirement anyway?

'tis a good question. AFAIK you should be able to get the same performance as an X800 XT-PE with something like a 6800GT, which is cheaper and needs one power connector instead of two.

But hey, I don't design these things. :)

IT's a star destroyer. And IMPERIAL star destroyer. Your choice should be simple. Come over to the dark side, just try not to leave the pieces lying around the house for the dog and/or munchkin
to eat. MMM. Deathstar flavored candy.

Damn straight! that's why it's in the running. I've had my eye on it for quite some time but at 3 bills, it's just not something I could justify getting.. until now that is! ;-)

You could just not get either... and get that new ink you were talking about on your side instead....

something tells me I'd need more than this for that. Looking over my drawings, I keep saying to myself "man, that is a LOT of fill" ;-)

I'm inclined to say video card... but if you won't be using it much... go with the Star Destroyer.

Oh, I'll *use* it. I'm in front of my machine quite a bit. It's frivolous because I don't *need* it. Getting it would let me crank doom3 up and probably play everything else in some ridiculously high resolution. My current rig runs everything just fine with all the bells and whistles at 1600x1280

The Legos will be around longer, it will be HOURS, and HOURS of fun, and when it is done you can display it, or start all over :)

On second thought, don't get either of those. Get a present for chemchick since her finger is falling off due to blatant chemical abuse.

Yeah, right? I just read those entries. perhaps a box of finger cots?

A box of finger cots would probably be appropriate.
