While organizing my class notes, I found a piece of paper that I had scrawled long hand a ficlet written right after "... And Found". So, here it is. Why would you let something like that go to waste?
Title: Not Alone
Rating: G
Warning: Through "... And Found"
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Characters: Kate, Sun (friendship)
Summary: But at least this time, she wasn't sitting alone.
Author's Notes: Short ficlet. Inspired by the icon to this post, which
mysticxf made, and using the fanfic100 prompt "32. Sunset" for the
varietypack100 challenge.
She used to sit alone, watching the waves pass. It held a mild comfort in the silence... and the water always kept moving, always kept crashing. At least, it used to hold a mild comfort. These days the waves held loneliness and emphasized the divide between those on the island, and those... not.
Kate sighed into the wind, it carrying the sound behind her, and she closed her eyes feeling the spray of the salty breeze. It had once held promise, but now only pain.
But at least this time, she wasn't sitting alone. Kate opened her eyes and looked to her left seeing Sun's face tilted towards the setting sun, her own eyes closed and her cheeks damp.
"You know, we're never going to see the rescue boat if we both sit here with our eyes closed."
Sun burst into a painful laugh, and Kate smiled back. Sun pulled her knees closer and rested her head on Kate's shoulder. "I just want him to be safe. I want my husband back."
Kate pulled her closer and stroked her hair until she calmed and the sun set. "I know, Sun. I know."
