Well, what a week for me so far. And it's only Wednesday morning!
With father's day coming up - and various other family-oriented events occurring around me - I decided on Monday to track down my father.
Quick recap for the uninitiated, my parents divorced when I was about 2 and a half, and I went with my mother, only really having contact with my father very sporadically and for 2 years in '91 and '92 when I lived with him in NZ. I haven't seen him since '92 and hadn't spoken to him since I turned 21 (in '01).
So on monday I tracked down an uncle who still lives in the home town and got my father's number from him. I then proceeded to call my dad ... after 7 years. It went really well, and I'll be calling him from home this Sunday as I get 5c/min to NZ on my VOIP phone, I also want to head over there around my birthday next year to see him in person although I haven't brought the idea up with him yet.
But that's just the start.
The uncle I got dad's number from (Paul) also gave me the numbers of my aunts/uncles who were all dying to hear from me, thus a round of catch-up phone calls ensued last night. My auntie Kerrie (who is just 7 years older than me) has 3 daughters of her own and has remarried a man with 2 boys. 2 of my cousins that I still think of as the little girls that couldn't stop laughing at my "Genie" impersonations are married or soon to be, and one is a mother already.
Also, sadly, my paternal grandparents have both passed, nan 4 years ago (cancer) and pop 2 years ago (loneliness and a broken heart)
