It was a warm summer night in the palace. Not a sound was heard except the soft pitter-patter of light-weighted feet walking through the elegantly marbled halls. Once the feet came to a halt, a soft knock came to a door.
"Come in," said the woman, unsure of who could be up at this ungodly hour and knocking on her bedroom door nonetheless.
A small, brunette-headed boy with short, wavy hair and emerald coloured eyes came into her line of sight when she craned her neck over the footboard of her huge bed. She smiled warmly.
"Heracles, what are you doing up at such an hour?"
The boy rubbed one of his eyes with the hand that wasn't full of mewling kitten and yawned. "I woke up from a bad dream and couldn't go back to sleep, Mama."
"Oh?" The woman smiled and set her book down on the table next to the bed. After she got out from under the sheet, she went to her son and bent down to meet his eyes. She smiled again, putting a hand on his tiny shoulder. "Well, then why don't you climb on up into Mama's bed and I'll tell you a story to help you get back to sleep? Sound good?"
He yawned and nodded, heading for the bed. The small child set the kitten down on the bed and then proceeded to climb up himself. The ancient empire chuckled under her breath as she watched him struggle to get up onto the high bed as she hurried over to help him get onto the bed. "There we go," she said with a push of her hand on his bottom.
"So... who's story am I telling tonight, moros? Will it be Perseus? Jason?" she asked as she situated them on the bed, pillows stacked up for them to lean against as they sat up and a sheet pulled over their legs so they could keep their legs warm. She pulled him close to her side and laid her head on his.
Oh, how she knew that her little boy was a sap for the heroes of her time, as was she. It was something about their self-sacrificing and always-ready-for-battle personalities that always got to her. The Byzantine Empire had always bred glorious heroes.
Heracles snuggled close to her and sat the kitten in his lap, pondering who he wanted to hear about. "What about... Achilles?" he asked, lifting his head to meet her gaze.
"Ah, so you want to hear about Achilles and the Trojan War?" She raised her brow with a questioning look as Heracles nodded. The Empire smiled and sighed, kissing the top of her little son's head. "Okay, then. I'll start from the beginning."
"Achilles was born from the mortal king of Myrmidon, Peleus, and the nereid, Thetis. The great gods Zeus and Poseidon had been rivals in taking Thetis' hand until Prometheus warned the gods that Thetis would bear a son greater than their father, Kronos, if either were to bed her. They withdrew their pursuit and let Peleus wed her..."
Greece suddenly awoke to the conference meeting he had fallen asleep in, the ethereal feeling of the memory of his mother still lingering.
He sighed.
Her stories always seemed to be the things he remembered most about her. The way she told them always made your imagination wander.
Heracles missed that.
