Who knows, but you have the satisfaction of knowing you are the sort of person who is willing to help someone in need. And it's not being a sucker. The old '£18 for a pair of specs' trick isn't exactly common!

I applaud you: this is a great, and fairly cheap, way to conduct a social study and bring some emotion into an average work day. Now I'd like to know whether he came back. My bet is that yes, he came back and he gave you that fat ring as a reward. Brava!
