I'm rather of the same mind with 'covers' and I'm not shy about telling my Dad what he can pull off and not but he's got skill with the old school soulful genre of music, I think.
James Marsden does renditions of Elvis and Sinatra songs that are gorgeous - so yeah, there are some people who have the singing chops to pull it off.
It's on shows like "American Idol" that produce some of the most cringeworthy moments. Occasionally they'll be a performance that's as good as the original version ... like Jordin Sparks singing Shirley Bassey's "I Who Have Nothing" (which I just found out was actually a cover of Ben E. King's version.)
