The compartment was fit to burst. The whole of the group that had sat together on the Quidditch pitch had squeezed in together once they had boarded the train. A mess of chocolate frog wrappers, used bits of parchment and crumbs were scattered across the floor, testament to their small leaving celebration. The companions had fallen unusually quiet though, now that the Hogwarts Express was almost into Kings Cross.
“We’re all going to keep in touch, right?” Pansy asked.
A chorus of agreement met her question and helped somewhat to quell her nervousness. It was Ron who finally decided to make a few parting words.
“I know that not all of our times together have been joy and laughter,” he said, pausing for the snorts that accompanied his sentiment. “But I think that I speak for all of us when I say that, at the end of the day, it’s been good. I’ll definitely never forget some of the things that I got up to at school, and I’ll never forget any of you.”
Some of the girls started to sniffle, and even a couple of boys had suspiciously shiny eyes.
“I have everyone’s contact details,” Hermione said. “I’m going to arrange lots of reunions so that we can find out how everyone is getting on. None of you are going to escape that easily!”
“Come on,” said Blaise. “We need to go.” He was right. The train was now sitting at the station and the hordes of students were pouring off onto the platform, preparing either for a summer at home or to step out into the great wide world on their own for the very first time. The group dissipated after many hugs, kisses, and promises to owl each other. Eventually Harry and Draco were the only two left.
“I guess this is it,” Harry said.
“Yeah,” Draco responded, staring nervously at his hands. “Everyone’s gone their separate ways.”
Harry stepped forward so that he could tilt Draco’s head up. “We’ll all see each other again soon,” he told him.
Draco nodded despondently. “It’s just…” he trailed off. After a moment he looked up at Harry, his eyes wide. “Was Seamus right?” he asked.
“About what?”
“He said we wouldn’t stay away from each other for long.” Draco’s gaze was focussing on everywhere apart from Harry.
“Hey,” the brunet said, sliding his arms around Draco. “Look at me.” When Draco did, Harry continued, “Of course he was right. I want to spend this summer and beyond with you at my side. But you know that I have to sort out some stuff first, and I know that you do too.”
Draco nodded, resigned.
“Come on,” said Harry. “I promise it won’t be very long. It’s only going to take me a couple of days until I have everything under control at Grimmauld Place. I’m not sure, but I think I’m going to sell it. I want to make sure that I don’t make a mistake doing that, though. If I spend a few nights there I can see how I feel about living in the place, and I need to sort through some of the stuff I have in storage there regardless of whether I move or not.”
“Yeah, I know.” Draco said. “I have to sort through my father’s accounts and have a long talk with my mother about what she wants to do from now on. I just…” he blinked rapidly. “I never thought I would say this to anyone, but I’m going to miss you.”
Harry laughed. “I’m going to miss you, too. I promise that I’ll owl you every day, and I’ll let you know as soon as I’m done.”
“I’ll do the same,” Draco promised. Harry smiled at him, gave him a soft kiss and pulled him into a tight hug. “See you soon,” he whispered into Draco’s ear and then he was gone, off to face the future and letting Draco go to face his.
