Every year it was the same. Harry always dreaded going to the Great Hall for breakfast on Valentine’s day because he knew that he would be bombarded with cutesy cards, paper hearts and all manner of things far too pink and fluffy. It was completely humiliating and, worst of all, he knew that every person behind the sap only did it because of his name. That hurt.
This year was no different. Ron and Hermione made a few half hearted comments to him across the table, but it was easy to see that their primary interest was in each other. Harry was about to shove the pile of cards in front of him into his bag and make a hasty exit from the hall when his attention was caught by one object in the pile.
In the midst of all the colourful greetings lay a single envelope. It was remarkable in the fact that it was unremarkable: a dull grey colour adorned by nothing more than neat black letters on the front that read ‘HP’. Harry quickly glanced around before pulling the envelope towards him and opening it. Inside he found a lone piece of parchment and the same tidy hand had written ‘DM’ in the middle of the paper. Nothing more, nothing less.
Harry’s gaze shot up to focus across the room where Malfoy usually sat and he was only half surprised to find the other boy already making his way across the room. Nobody else seemed to be paying any attention to the fact that a Slytherin was wandering over to the Gryffindor table, yet Harry still held his breath when Malfoy opened his mouth.
“It was a dare.”
“Who from?” Harry asked quietly.
Malfoy smiled at him and moved even closer. The others were now paying attention and Harry thought Ron had started squawking but he ignored them all. Malfoy was now only inches from Harry and he leaned forward to whisper,
“From my heart.”
