The solid thunk of a tumbler against wood seems to echo through the house, a gunshot in the quiet midnight. He tries to concentrate on the book he's got hidden under the sheets, illuminated by a pilfered flashlight. But the summer house is small and voices carry over the hardwood and through the glass, even furiously hushed voices, late at night.
"Dammit, Teena, I'm giving you a choice here!"
"I'm not going to choose."
"One of us has to. You know the deal that was made."
"I'm not going to be a part of this, Bill. We'll go away, go to North Carolina, to my parent's place--"
"As if that would do a damn bit of good with these people."
"Then you do it. I don't want to know."
A door slams, so hard he could hear the loose glass panes rattle even in his bedroom.
After that, silence reigned.
