As a little girl, her father had taught her the constellations, had told her that as long as she could see the stars, they would guide her home. Tonight, standing on the edge of the desert with the hot wind ruffling her hair the way it once had coming off the Pacific, she gazes up at the heavens rotating slowly above her. She wonders whether Mulder, nascent on the islands of the fictional Pequod and historical Essex, had ever learned the art of celestial navigation.
The brilliant sparkle of the Milky Way glows above her, as the pale refraction of the moon washes the red landscape dun. She scans the billions of lights for evidence of diffraction or gravitational lensing, or even an errant twinkle. Her eyes came to rest on the luminance of Vega as her hand came to rest low on her abdomen.
"Guide him home to us," she whispers to the shimmering sky.
