This was probably the saddest place he’d spent the holidays, and for Mulder, that said a lot. The wooden steps up to the cabin’s door sagged, threatening to give way under Scully’s modest weight. The carpet was a shade of yellow that hadn’t been manufactured since 1976. Drafts crept through the windows, no mean feat with snow drifts piled up over the sills. And the bathroom ceiling was stained a worrisome hue of beige which implied leaks and the growth of microscopic organisms.

The kitchen was the piece de resistance. Mulder was certain it dated from the Truman administration, though the microwave may have only be as old as Scully. The microwave and toaster have been the only appliances they’d felt safe using. Or at least able to put out the fire that might result from their use.

There was no reason the kitchen should keep him from making her a proper Christmas dinner. He wasn’t sure where to find a goose, or how to make cranberry sauce, but for her, he was willing to try. Glancing around the room, he headed for the door, determined to give her a holiday, even if he couldn't give her a normal life.
