Since the cancer, she'd had trouble getting warm. There seemed to be some deep, elemental part of her that had frozen, refusing to thaw even as she started to recover and regain some body mass. Despite being swaddled in layers of silk and wool and down, tonight the bitter wind seemed to slice right through her, leaving her trembling with cold.
"Mulder." Her voice escaped as a puff of heat in the frosty night air as she tried to keep her teeth from chattering.
He turned his gaze from the sky to her, looking as if he just remembered her presence, then extended a hand and drew her close. "Look," he said, pointing at the black northern horizon where brilliant light was dancing.
Settling into the lee of his arm, next to his warmth, she resisted the urge to say 'I told you so' and merely smiled.
"You were right," he admitted, ducking his head and letting his warm breath thaw her face just a little. Then he turned away, leaving his arm around her as they crossed the snowy field back to the car.
