Robots....

After watching WALL-E for the dozenth or so time, my wife asks me, "You can't build EVE, can you?". Sorry. Even other than the artificial intelligence and death ray arm cannon, she floats on magical force fields. And the parts of her body aren't actually connected. Maybe if I had room-temperature superconductors to work with ( Read more... )

Could you build Maximillian (from The Black Hole)?

What about an authentic looking Cronos device?

What about a watch where the hands always point to noon, but hour, minute, and second faces rotate?

What about one of the bug robots from Renegade?

What about an LED array of yellow/green diodes programmed to blink in the specific pattern of a female firefly? With settings for different species?

It's been an ambition of mine ever since I saw the movie. The whole floating in midair unsupported thing still has me stumped. Whirling sawblade arms I can do. (Note to self: Halloween costume for next year?)

Haven't seen the movie, but from the pictures I was able to grab it looks like a job for wax investment casting. Which I haven't done, but have been meaning to try out.

Ooh, neat idea. Tricky to do it as a watch - my hands aren't as steady as they once were, and I really don't have the tools to work on that small of a scale. Making it as a wall clock would be easier.

Um. You've got me here. I don't recognize the reference.

Renegade was (no spoilers)a sci-fi thriller with Tom Selleck as the hero and Gene Simmons (of KISS) as the villain. It was set in the not too distant future. Robots are commonplace- realistic robots too: not humanoid, no antigrav, crude and limited AI etc. Crops are picked by harvesting bots that look like they were made by John Deere. Offices are cleaned by janitorial bots that look like trash cans. Every now and then, a malfunction makes one of these bots dangerous and the cops are called in to stop it. Then, Simmons starts killing people and making drug deals and unleashing killer bots. Even the killer bots are realistic. They are about a foot long, have six legs, and each is armed with one hypodermic full of poison. I'll go look for a pic ( ... )

Oops. My mistake. The Selleck film was called Runaway not renegade!
