A guy from work wants me to tutor him in Linux. He offered to pay; and, frankly, I could use the scratch. So, hive mind: what do I charge?

ETA: He agreed to $50/hour without a hitch! Yay!

I'd go with $15 to $20 an hour, which is what I'd charge for knitting lessons.

I agree. That is a reasonable amount.

That and you should hint in a very subtle way that tipping is appreciate, especially when is is chocolate.

I agree. When I tutored math in Orange County I told people that my rate was $50/hour but that I was willing to do a sliding scale. Now, I think only one person ever DID pay me $50/hour, but it was a good starting point.

And teaching Linux really is an immensely valuable service. If your process of LEARNING Linux was/is anything like mine... imagine how much of your valuable time you would have saved having someone who already knew what they were doing sitting at your elbow, rather than tearing your hair out and combing through forum threads of questionable accuracy.

Finally, thank you for giving me an excuse to use my linux userpic.
