Ah, marching band. I share those memories as well. Though his advice that other people's moods are not about you is incredibly useful and not a piece of advice I learned until way into adulthood. As such, I am still trying to remind myself that that is the case and not take everything so personally. I wish I had been encouraged to understand things like that when I was younger.
I feel so grateful for having undercover philosophers as band directors!! ;D I had two in high school who both imparted a ton of wisdom that really stuck with me and helped me all these years. One thing that backfired a little was that when I was in charge of teen volunteers at the zoo, I tried to act like a great leader, and the best leader I knew was Meza. So I was firm with them, and then they almost immediately started hating me and ignoring me, and I had to redeem myself a bit and try not to have a crappy relationship. But even from the mistakes I made with that, I feel like I learned a lot. Kind of in a trial by fire kind of way.
This was a great remembrance! The rules of advice are good ones. When I see marching bands, I am so impressed that they can march in unison, creating words, designs, etc., AND playing an instrument.

That sounds like a challenging but very rewarding experience, and the results speak for themselves!
