Yours Alone

When Jonghyun finds Kibum, it’s completely be accident. He’s just casually minding his own business, exhausted from strenuous studying and choir practices when he hears a soft whimpering from behind the bookstore on 12th street. He can’t deny the fact that he’s curious, and when he peers around the archaic brick he sees him there, curled up in a corner next to a dumpster.
He reaches out to touch him but he cowers away, trembling slightly against the damp building wall. Jonghyun kneels down and strokes his soft hair, smiling gently, “I won’t hurt you, I promise.”
Kibum looks slightly less scared, but he still trembles quietly as Jonghyun takes him home, humming softly to calm his nerves.
----
Jonghyun gently bathes him and feeds him, setting up a makeshift bed in the living room.
It’s not much, but it would be enough.
Kibum is in pretty bad condition, that fact’s pretty clear. Jonghyun considered taking him to get checked out, but he’s a struggling college student like everyone else, so there’s not a lot of room in his wallet for extra expenses.
----
Kibum is lucky to have improved so much. Jonghyun would have said it was just because if a good diet and a safe environment, but Kibum knew in his heart it was more than that.
There were many nights were Kibum would remember the terrible things in his past, and without fail, Jonghyun would follow his cries and rub his side soothingly until he drifted off to sleep. For once in his tumultuous life, Kibum felt safe.
----
Kibum is bustling and energetic, full of life and excitement, and it brings Jonghyun no greater joy than to see Kibum run to him every day after a long day at school, seeming as if he had been waiting for him all day.
Jonghyun embraces him warmly, giving him a loving kiss before preparing dinner. And after a relaxing evening, they curl into bed together, Jonghyun feeling fulfilled and Kibum feeling protected.
----
Kibum lives for Jonghyun, every moment is a precious memory, every second he spends with Jonghyun is like a precious light that could never be dimmed.
His heart was Jonghyun’s. And Jonghyun’s alone.
----
When Jonghyun brings Her over, Kibum is terrified. He’s never seen anyone but Jonghyun before, and the way she acts is unsettling. When she’s around, Jonghyun pretends like Kibum doesn’t even exist, like he’s not even there.
She always coos at Kibum, squeeling girlishly about how cute he is, but Kibum hates her.
He can’t help it, he really can’t. He just can’t stand the thought of ever losing Jonghyun, especially to this terrifying girl.
----
Soon, Jonghyun comes home less and less. There’s no one there to make his dinner, no one to kiss him at the door, no one to put him to bed.
When Jonghyun does come home, he’s always on the phone and shoos Kibum away in annoyance.
Soon, Kibum sleeps alone and doesn’t wait at the door anymore, because he knows no one will be there.
----
Kibum is terrified. There’s boxes and bags full of Jonghyun’s things everywhere, and when he looks out the window, he sees a large moving truck outside.
She’s here too. Helping Jonghyun move the boxes out of the apartment and soon there’s no more boxes and bags, just empty space and the makeshift bed Jonghyun had conjured up when he first brought Kibum home.
He watches from the window as Jonghyun winds his arm around her waist and helps her into the moving truck before climbing in himself and driving away; never once looking back.
Kibum feels slow tears begin to form as he slips from the couch onto the floor, his heart had shattered into a billion tiny little pieces and was currently sitting in a dozen boxes in the back of a moving truck.
----
Kibum is scared, he’s never been outside before, and he has no idea where he’s going. He makes it to the street and stumbles around aimlessly before sitting down behind the same bookstore Jonghyun had found him by so long ago.
----
Onew was beyond exhausted, he’d finally managed to get a job at the old bookstore on 12th and boy had he needed it! After all he was a struggling college student just like everyone else.
He trudged home absentmindedly when a soft whimpering filters in from behind him, he looks back and gasps quietly.
“Hey little guy! What are you doing out here by yourself?”
He smiled gently and picked Kibum up, reading the tag on the collar around his neck, “Kibum, huh? That’s a cute name.”
Kibum nuzzled into the man’s shoulder, enjoying the feel of his hands running over his soft fur.
From now on, his heart was his, and his alone.
