but would you take a job as a janitor or a gardner or a maid or a cosmetologist (i.e. the manicure/pedicure type)? Jobs which *anyone* can supposedly do and which often go to recent immigrants/non-white-americans and have little inherent status attached to them and even less of a salary?

Because I see the styrofoam cup not as a job one hates but rather a job lacking status and/or money (not so much teaching because teaching does require additional education and thus a certain affluence as well). And in the context of the coffee analogy I can't really picture the first person to take a cup would not choose one of the nicer cups over a paper or styrofoam one... who or what type of person would pick a styrofoam cup? And is that perhaps a better person?

Often times one can find the *most* optimistic people (especially young children) in utter poverty precisely because they own nothing and thus have nothing to lose and only everything to gain.
