violin prices literally run from 50 bucks to hundreds of thousands of dollars. however, in general, price is not reflective of quality (except when you get really cheap or are ordering through a catolog or website, usually). price is related to who's made the instrument and where. for example, my violin is a 2005 chinese instrument that cost about 700$. It is a high quality instrument that i probably won't be replacing for a long time. But if that exact same instrument were italian made, i probably wouldn't have been able to buy it for less than 7000$.
so poke around, do some research. you could also look into renting a violin as well.
Yeah renting won't work. It's a potential Christmas or birthday or anniversary present for Anne if we're still together when I actually have that kind of money and she's forgotten enough about this or given up enough hope that she will be surprised.
i wouldn't recommend picking out a violin for someone. different people need different instruments. if this is something you're planning on doing, contact the owner of a local instrument shop and see if you can set up a time (after hours if at all possible) to have Anne audition a selection of instruments. Don't look at prices until the instrument has been chosen (remember, the most expensive instrument is not necessarily the best, so don't let the owner pull that on you), and bring a few other people with to listen to the instruments.
if you want, i can explain in further detail how my teacher took me through the process of buying an instrument.
