so my aunt took a road trip to houston to meet the guru. the long and the short of it, he promised that he could cure her without surgery. this of course feeds into her baseline desire of not wanting surgery in general

I'm with Sozz, Linda and Gwen; they pretty much said what I was thinking. And I think Gwen's is definitely something to try, if you can arrange a meeting with him.
But I actually went through this about six or seven years ago, albeit on the sidelines. One of my Mom's closest friends was diagnosed with breast cancer, a rather large lump as it turned out. (Don't remember how she missed it while it grew that big....) But she went the herbal/naturopathic-only route, too, and only went into standard medical care when it was very clear that the "natural treatments" weren't working.
She died within just a couple of years. (Or less, I don't really remember the timeline....)
Whatever you do about your Mom, it's like people said -- she's an adult, and ultimately you can't force her to go into a treatment she doesn't want.
But in the meantime let's implement the above three's plans. I'll even ride in the van with Sozz.
