Indeed, and it seems that making them illegal doesn't seem to stop criminals from getting tooled-up either!

The ideas in your last paragraph sound reasonable; I presume that the possession of a driver's license is so widespread that the chance of a potential gun purchaser not having one is low.

Regrettably, that's the kind of line that only works in places where the Great Middle is unwilling to accept a complete ban on guns. In Britain, I'd be afraid saying so might prompt the belief that we have to outlaw shotguns, rimfires, and muzzleloaders
