And if wishes were horses...

There's a meme going around, and I picked it up over at Tam's:

"What would you get if you could get any five guns, cost and practicality be hanged?Cost be hanged? I'll rule out fixed and crew-served guns here, to keep the decision making process manageable ( Read more... )

Now I'll have to answer this...

Indeed you shall. For what it's worth, I've chosen to interpret "practicality be hanged" as a go-ahead to consider illiberal firearms laws overriden for the sake of argument; I couldn't own the C96 with its shoulder stock in New Jersey. I assume this parameter will have a much greater impact on your list.

It does indeed have some effect, although some of the items I'd very much like to own are legal. I've even got one already (although not a very good example).

Fair enough. I took the meme to mean "guns you wouldn't buy in real life, but would wish for them if you could wish for them," leading me to exclude firearms I'm in love with and may in fact save up for in the future.

An attainable grail-gun list would be much harder to pin down. A Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless and at least two Smith & Wesson Top Breaks would make a mighty struggle for places.

Your link to the Savage Arms pistol is broken - you're missing the http:// and there's some ellipsis in the middle. It looks like you've copied a "link as displayed on a web page", not a real link.

I'm not finding it easily while searching the NRA site, or I'd provide a substitute link.

Bah--That's exactly what I did. The computer I'm working on is filtered. I was just sure enough that it was a page I'd seen before to hazard a blind link, only to bork it in the silliest way.

The NRA site organization is terrible, so I'm not at all surprised you can't find it. For me, it's the third link for the Google search "savage us army test pistol", sans quotes.

Ah-ha! I tried their on-site search, and browsed the galleries at the right time briefly, but didn't think to actually GOOGLE.

...And after handling a Mini-14 at the NRA con, I totally understand. It's an AR for all practical purposes, but designed by an old fuddy-duddy who didn't cotton to these newfangled plastic rifles with their pistol grips. What could be more perfect?

I'd assume the Mauser would be used exclusively for hunting bear?
