I enjoyed listening to the interview. I am one who always favors getting an education. But not for just the purpose of job training. (there are trade schools for that) The purpose of education is to challenge the student to do critical thinking so one can become a lifelong learner. I hope your mom is able to fulfill her dream. Please read this post to your mom too since she and I are about the same age.
Monday May 8 and continuing through Friday May 12, 2006, WCQR listeners will be invited to visit www.wcqr.org to vote for their favorite contestant. Here is something your mom needs to realize. She has to sign a release that makes her responsible for the income tax of the value of the gift. This would involve roughly 15% of the value of the gift. She might be liable for Social Security and Medicare taxes too. I am not sure of this issue. The rate of those additional taxes are 15.3%. I mention this so your mom can plan her finances.
