White Tiger

I began reading The White Tiger. Now initially the novel was interesting but the more I read it, the more I began to realize that it does not appeal to me. He generalizes everything a lot, in fact at times it resembles something of the old "thakur" movies with the fight between the downtrodden and the abominable landlord. The paragraph where he ( Read more... )

I felt the same way reading it through.. Aparently it's a style of writing, having everything that's bad that could happen to a million people happening to one character. I forget the name of this kind of writing but it doesn't appeal to me. So someone suggested another book that I recently read called A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry that I liked much more... absolutely depressing but yet very nice written!

Will try and get that book! Without giving away the plot, just generally, what is the novel about? I really did not like this style at all!

it's a story of different characters in India...It follows the life of a young Indian man and his life in college, a young woman from a fairly well off family and her struggles, and a young boy and his uncle who come from a small village and their stories... and overall the impact of caste system plays in their lives. it's a complex web of events and lives. ..

I can understand (though I haven't read the book). That's why I always approach fiction with a lot of trepidation, no matter what the reputation.

Yes thats what one should do! The whole passages about servants only looking after dogs and drivers acting as in house help also really bugged me. We have domestic help but everyone has their fixed job, in fact nowhere does a driver clean the house. And my pets are my life, I am the only one taking care of my dog and not some servants, unless am ill or have gone out of station. And those descriptions about 'Balram' running to stop his master from doing anything for himself is exaggerated, it does not happen anywhere!! In every house I have seen, employers and domestic help work together. Its just too exaggerated and irritating now.
