Hear, hear! Have you read this book? I read a good review about it in The Guardian by Tishani Doshi. In it she says: "The real triumph of Beautiful Thing is how Faleiro dismantles the grand tradition of marriage in India, exposing it for what it is - a form of slavery for a large percentage of women who are bound to their husbands for food and the roofs over their heads, but rarely ever for love." Your post reminded me of this review. Hope you're well!
No hadn't read it but thanks to your reference, just ordered it online via flipkart :)
I am just glad that slowly women out here are getting empowered and I know enough divorcees who gave a marriage their best shot before being forced to accept the truth-it wasn't meant to be. So I know not everyone adopts a casual approach, people do try, but its important to be happy yourself before you can share that happiness with others. Thats why I feel if you're a working woman, you better continue after marriage too, makes a huge difference, opens up your world too. How have you been? I have just been busy with the wedding preps and the ton of office work which suddenly came!
Yes, you're absolutely right. Slowly but surely now. The problem with female empowerment is that it has been severely limited to those in middle and upper classes. The majority of women come from very poor backgrounds and they are largely exploited by a society in which men bully their wives into submission. Until that culture changes and permeates amongst the masses, it will be impossible to claim substantial progress.
I've been good, went on a nice trip for Eid to Istanbul. Had dad around just before that. Still looking for jobs. Not looking forward to the onset of winter... the best part about summer are the long days. Each night is becoming longer and I don't like it at all. It's not like we've had much of a warm summer either... oh well.
