SPN gen fic - Five Postcards Dean didn't send

Dec 01, 2007 02:01

I was going through my supernatural fic folder tonight - trying to force the muse to work on some of my half-written stories, when I came across a fic I wrote about 15 months ago. It was for a fanzine that never happened. I've written a number of little scenes that provide the background for this fic, but I've never actually posted the fic itself ( Read more... )

Wow. Just Wow. That could almost be canon. Something Sam found in the trunk when he and Bobby were clearing it out while Dean was in the coma. But just like this is it's own kind of awesome.

Thank you for posting!!

Thanks. I did ponder changing the ending to canon, but I liked the tie in with the Kerouac line at the end, so I let Dean be out of the coma. And John be alive. Because I'm a sap. *g*

What an interesting idea. Something about Sam looking at those postcards and knowing...really knowing, that Dean was doing all this without Sam. The school-boy at that time, would probably not really have cared about it, but present day Sam does.

I love Sam and his memories. Like flipping through an old photo album. Awesome stuff.

Thanks. I think Sam does appreciate now how much Dean focuses on him, but I suppose at the age of eighteen, he'd have been more self-centred. Sammy's memories were just fun to write. *g*

This is so nice. I love the slow, thoughtful pace, Sam pausing to savor Dean's words, the words he never sent, and to sift through his own memories. What makes it extra poignant is that Sam's reading these cards after the fact. Dean was always thinking of him, but he never sent those cards, and Sam went on to college simply assuming Dean would always be okay. *sniff*

I actually think that's a large chunk of what's driving Sam in Season 3. Dean is Sam's True North, the one constant in his life, and just like we saw back in "Faith", Sam refuses to imagine a world without Dean. But at the time of this vignette, he'd come all to close to losing his big brother, who let him close those doors while he was away at college. *sniff*

Thanks for sharing.
Cheers ~

Thanks. That was what I was hoping to convey - how Sam is Dean's focus, and how much Dean is Sam's constant. I'm so glad that came through for you. *g*

Very nice. I like how even though Dean isn't in this story physically, he still is here, almost more so because of the postcards and the emotions and thoughts they convey. Really liked this fic and how it allowed Sam a chance to get to see a little private part of Dean for once that he isn't always privy to. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I felt like Dean really was in the story - and John too, especially in the Kittaning one. I have this scene in my head of the two of them sitting in the diner, laughing their asses off at the giant cowboy Sam statue. *g*
