How do they know?

Why is that electronic devices always die in the middle of the night and then have to beep to let you know? At the pleasant hour of 3:30am, something in the house started going "be-doop" to call attention to itself. Every 2 minutes. Which finally led to a search for the culprit. Found one phone that was showing a red battery bar, so plugged that in. 2 minutes later, "be-doop." Aigh, it was a different phone. Turned that one off, and all was quiet.

Several years ago, we were staying at a friend's apartment in NYC (she was away on business). At some unreasonable hour of the early morning, the smoke alarm started chirping. So, here we are, in a strange apartment with 10 foot ceilings, and a chirping alarm. I think I finally had to climb up on word_geek's shoulders and pull the battery to make it stop.

I think it is a grand conspiracy of electronic devices to only die at the most inconvenient times.
