Five Subjects
KimJ gave me five subjects.
Aeris
What can I say; I’d wanted to be a mother as long as I can remember. I have always loved babies. But as much as you might want to be a mother, nothing can prepare you for the reality. I always knew that most mothers loved their children but I didn’t realize that you actually fall in love with your children, it was amazing. I think the other thing that surprised me is how that love grows and changes. It’s all protective and nurturing in the beginning and then as she reached adulthood it is more like a deep friendship.
Aeris and I talk to each other in a kind of short hand speech now, my Mom told me that sometimes she couldn’t’ follow our conversations. I think one of the nicest things is sharing what you are interested in, like Trek. She loves the Sime/Gen Universe but not Darkover, she showed me Anne McCaffrey’s Brain Ship stories which I loved but I couldn’t get interested in Crystal Singer.

I started out very early drawing, blank paper wasn’t safe around me and for a while during the sixties I wanted to be a fashion illustrator. I drew very elongated females naturally and even know I have to fight off the instinct to make my human figures very tall. I realize now that what I did was very Erte like. http://www.erte.com/ Mine weren’t so Art Deco but I have that tall thing going. My favorite period though is Art Nouveau and I adore Alphonse Mucha’s work http://www.allposters.com/-st/Alphonse-Mucha-Posters_c26867_.htm.
I used to have a large collection of Silver Age comics, sadly they did live through Aeris who had this tendency as a child to read things to death. I loved Curt Swan and Neil Adams (who drew the best Green Lantern then). I have a numbered and signed set of Frazetta “Lord of the Rings” prints http://frankfrazetta.org/tolkien0001.php but I don’t think he got Eowyn right lol.
Kathryn Janeway
You know it’s funny but I didn’t start out being a Kathryn Janeway fan, she kind of grew on me. For years I would have told you (even after Next Generation was on) that Mr. Spock was my favorite character, I would have these very erotic day dreams about him lol. Anyway I watched Voyager and this time I didn’t insert myself into the adventure, I watched the characters interact. I wanted Kathryn with Chakotay and I was one that recognized the chemistry from the very first. It just was so completely intriguing.
I probably didn’t really become a Kathryn Janeway fan until I started reading fan fiction. This was my favorite kind of stuff to read, stuff which was hard to find then, romance with starships. So now I think that I am in love with how the characters react to each other, rather than loving the character his or herself.
Being a Blue Person in a Red State
It’s kind of weird, but then my immediate family is the blue sheep of the extended family lol. You should have seen some of the stuff my cousins were e-mailing me from West Texas. One thing thought, Texas may be red for a while but it has mostly been blue in times past. We are the state of Lyndon Johnson, Sam Rayburn, Jim Wright, and Ann Richards. We also gave people, Molly Ivins (who sadly passed away a couple of years ago.) She is in a lot of ways my hero, she believed that one person can change things. That often all it takes is for one person to stand up. You can find a lot of her columns on line and there are even some You Tube videos.
Sci-Fi Romance
Oh man my new love. I adore this genre; it’s what I have wanted to read for a very long time. There have been bits and pieces written down through the years. I loved Science Fiction but it was plot driven rather than character driven so there was very little romance. Some of the women writers hinted at it, or like Marion Zimmer Bradley actually had characters falling in love but still it wasn’t in the forefront of the stories.
Now women are writing it, and I love it and I am beginning to think “Hey, I think I can do that.” It’s a balancing act because you are asking the author to write one book that actually does two different things. Jacqueline Lichtenberg has been writing some very good essays about it on Alienromances http://aliendjinnromances.blogspot.com/ . I would highly recommend them.
