do you count Mrs Who, Mrs What, and Mrs Which from A Wrinkle in Time? No, I suppose not, they're not strictly wizards nor are they American.

Diane Duane's series "So You Want to Be a Wizard" talks about American kids who discover that they have wizard talents and learn to use them and save the world. It's a good series.

There's a novel by Patricia McKillip that I'm pretty sure is set in the US (maybe Britain but I doubt it, though I don't know if she ever specifies), about a girl who was trying to leave her past behind, but it comes back to bite her when she returns to her hometown for her grandfather's funeral. I can't remember the name, but the girl and her grandma and various others are wizards/witches. The name of the book might be something to do with stitching or sewing. It's an excellent book, all of McKillip's work is great.
