Having just shamelessly ripped off his painting of Christ Crucified ((Picocon art hopeful)), I'm beginning to reconsider my unflattering opinion of the Baroque era. Velázquez's Christ is not the angry Christ-of-war, glaring down from His cross, all but uttering 'I'll be back' in an Austrian accent. He is emaciated and pale and dying. A nominally Protestant upbringing has left me with a vague distaste for the focus on Christ's suffering rather than the bit where he comes back.

Given the choice to depict the Crucifixion or the Resurrection, it seems that artists have long preferred the "blood and wood" palette.

Ah, fair enough. Being brought up by an art student I tend to go 'ah, chiascuro! How delightful!' rather than consider the subject matter that much. But you're right, sometimes it'd be nice to see a painting which wasn't about horrible deaths.

...should I bring my goth or is this strictly a girly thing? Also is Andrew coming because I want to meeeeeeet him after all this drama :-D

Hmmm good point.

Goths are allowed - as long as he doesn't get annoyed at us being girly and stupid! Alas, Andrew is boring and hates clubs so I won't be able to convince him to go :(
