So along being a tortionaire, my former boss was also the tort-y kind. heureusement que le tort ne tue pas (that's what mortgage is for)

er...getting easily amused, too! ;)

So...is 'tortionaire' a real word? Or did you just make it up?

And yes, torts can kill. I think. Causing "wrongful death", I believe is the term. Don't know for sure -- haven't gotten there yet. :)

didn't make it up. "tortionnaire" exists. it's said of people specialized in "torture". une personne qui torture est un tortionnaire. (2 'n's).

Ah, ç'est pourquoi je ne pouvais pas le trouver dans le dictionnaire -- j'ai oublié le second 'n'. :-)

Et je crois que tous les ecrivains sont tortionnaires, parce que nous aimons torturer nos personnages. O:-)

I wonder what my lawyer would think of that. LOL!

of the "tort" explanation. since it's a law, thus lawyer stuff! ;)

Ah. Well, I don't have proof of my explanation, but it makes sense to me. American law is based on British law (vastly different from continental European law). And a long long long time ago, the Brits had this thing called "Law French". And even after the bulk of the population shifted to English, they still used Law French in legal matters (kinda like how the Catholic church used Latin even though NOBODY spoke it anymore). So we've actually got a fair amount of terms that come from French and I think that is way cool. :-)

Thanks for throwing in a french word to make it easy for me to understand! I know nothing at all about law, so I was thinking you might have misspelled the word "sort" or something. Way to learn cool new stuff!

Nope, it's tort. I had no idea what it was, either, until a couple days into class. :-P It is a fascinating subject, though.

Hehe, I'm a language nerd, so I love finding out/realising stuff like this. Interesting! Plus, I have French on the brain because I had class a couple of hours ago.

Isn't it fun? And I do love how foreign languages make a difference in how I understand/interpret new knowledge.
