Hube could never understand what she saw in him, but when he was with her, he didn't dwell on the whys and wherefores, choosing instead to savor the bit of sunlight she brought into his life. A more honorable man would have tried harder to turn her away, but he gave into his weakness and allowed her to reach part of his soul that he'd thought had shriveled up and died.
A more honorable man would never have let her into his bed.
He hadn't meant it to get that far. She'd been cold as ice, and after he'd wrapped her head and shoulders in a blanket, he rubbed her feet briskly between rough and callused palms, not wanting her to lose any more body heat through her extremities. When he'd taken her hands in his, they didn't seem quite as cold, and when she tugged them free he felt a tiny little twinge that he ignored until she lifted one of his hands and brought it to her cheek.
Her skin was cold but her eyes were warm, and she turned her face in his hand, rubbing her cheek against him in a way that reminded him of a cat. Her eyes slid shut and she let out a small sigh, and then her lips curved into a content smile as she breathed his name.
He had no right to let her presence warm him the way it did, but he'd let himself pretend, just for tonight, that there really was such a thing as love.
