The sound of the bell signaled to the fourth graders that it was time for lunch (the third graders having just returned from theirs), and the angel food cake offered for dessert went quickly. Duo's eyes were fixed on the last slice remaining, and he nearly jumped for joy when it went onto his tray.
He couldn't wait to eat it, but he knew as soon as he did, it would be gone, and so he took his time eating his sandwich. He even ate all the carrots on his plate first.
Even though much of his attention was on the cake, he was aware of the kid next to him leaning toward him, his shoulder bumping into Duo's.
"You can't have it."
Heero leaned on his elbow and stared up at him. "Just let me have a bite."
"Get your own cake."
"There isn't any left."
Duo turned sideways in his seat and pointed with his fork. "There's an entire chocolate cake over there."
"Chocolate. I don't like chocolate cake."
Duo poked at the brown frosting on his angel food cake. "This has chocolate frosting."
"I didn't say I didn't like chocolate. I don't like chocolate cake."
"Well this is mine. You snooze, you lose."
Heero watched Duo cut into the cake and bring a bite to his mouth, but he didn't say anything. It was enough to make Duo remind him just who had the cake and who didn't.
"You're not getting any."
A slow, lazy smile spread across Heero's face, and Duo felt a faint prickle of apprehension at the back of his neck.
"I bet I can get you to share your cake with me."
"I'll bet you that you can't." He put the fork into his mouth, but Heero was staring at him so intently he barely tasted it. If Heero thought he was going to intimidate him into giving up his cake, though, he was wrong.
Heero waited until he cut into the cake again with his fork. "Oh, I think I can."
Duo made a show of eating his next bite, chewing slowly and licking his lips afterwards. "Mmm, mmm," he said. "Good."
He tried to look at anything else in the cafeteria - the big colorful flowers that the second graders had made, the poster that showed how to save someone who was choking - but it was hard to ignore Heero when he was staring at him as if Duo might have been dessert instead of the cake.
Still, he managed to eat most of it and he was feeling pretty smug when he waved the last bite of cake. He actually should have bet Heero that he'd not get any of the cake. He'd been a bit envious of Heero's collection of baseball cards and he wouldn't have minded taking one of them off his hands.
When Heero lifted his head off his hand and sat back up, Duo couldn't resist crowing a bit. "It's too bad you didn't get any."
"Says you."
"Ha," Duo said, and just as he went to pop the last bite into his mouth, Heero leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. Mouth agape, Duo froze, and Heero's hair brushed against his face as he leaned over and took the last bit of cake off his fork.
He was still sitting there, fork clenched in his fist, when Heero got up from the table and picked up his tray.
Just as he got behind Duo, he bent over and whispered in his ear, "Says me."
