The following is a response to one persons live journal entry and some other overall typical UMBC bashing. The comments were that performance majors are illiterate and the new music ensemble and music forum are forms of punishment ( Read more... )

Ummmm take a joke maybe? I wasn't saying that anyone was illiterate I was saying it was for people who were admitting to being literate...the quote being "...musicology there which is the option they give performance students who actually admit to being literate." (this means that you say you posses the ability to read-not that you can not read, try actually READING what I said before jumping all over it). It is my journal so I can say what I wish, freedom of speech, as far as I know is still a right in this country. However, I am kind of touched that you would give such a trifling comment such commentary.

First, saying that performance majors choose to admit to being literate is still an insult, that we just rather sit and play the notes and live in ignorance. This disrespects those of us who chose to do performance and busted our asses to do so. Second, it is your journal, and this journal is mine, we both have the right to say what we please, thus I said what I wanted to say, so none of this freedom of speech crap as a come back. It doesn't work. I never said you didn't have a right to say what you want. I simply displayed the other side of things ( ... )

I did read your entry several times, actually. Yes, we all have to work hard at what we do. I do enjoy going to forums and to see new music being performed, believe it or not, and the comment you are referencing was an inside joke between two people.

I do not think performers are grunts who are ignorant or illiterate or whatever. And I never said this. I could go into how and why I ended up choosing my major but I do not feel it worth divulging. I never once said I was better than anyone else, you are putting words where there are none.

Another thing, yes, I do not like the school I go to and I openly admit that. However, I have never talked about the quality of the education, or a possible lack thereof. The only thing I can see that I openly complained about on my journal is the closing policy. Once again, you are putting words where there are none by saying I am "bashing UMBC".

I know though that it doesn't matter what I say in this situation so I am going to just let this drop.

Well I simply believe this whole issue has arisen from making something public that was intended for private ears. Pretty much everyone is guilty of putting something in a livejournal at some point not completely understanding its a live web publication. I apologize this situation has gotten to this point. As here, the subject is dropped.

i feel kind of bad that you wasted all that time writing that when you really don't get what was said in the first place or where it was coming from. Joke, anyone? ;)

(and about the personal vendetta thing...I personally can't stand out in the hall and clearly overhear a music-department administrator blatantly lying to someone about me without assuming that she might indeed be out to get me for some reason.)

No I did indeed get what was said. It was a statement meant to imply performance majors are dumb and musicology students are brilliant. This is insulting and had to be addressed. Now for the vendetta thing. Why didn't you interrupt them and set them straight? This isn't high school anymore. A teacher won't send you to the principals office for speaking up for yourself. If you allow that stuff to occur in front of you, of course people in the department will form a bad opinion of you and judge you unfairly. I am not saying that the teacher lying is innocent but you are an adult and you can talk to them like an adult and you can stop them and correct them. The tone you wish to use is up to you but you can speak to them. If you don't stand up for yourself now, in 5 years you might as well just lock yourself in the basement and cut off all human contact ( ... )

1. The conversation in which I was lied about and screwed over was not directed at me. It was going on behind my back, which made it all the worse. I was waiting outside this person's office for a meeting, and the door was open; thus, I heard the whole conversation. I wasn't about to barge in to a supposedly-private conversation and say anything.

2. I wouldn't care if people were poking fun at collegium or anything else. Just because I think something is wonderful doesn't mean I expect everyone to agree with me. I'm not offended when someone disagrees with my tastes; that's life. Variety makes life interesting, and not being easily offended makes life more enjoyable ;)
