I've recently started re-watching Princess Tutu and I completely agree with you in regards to Fakir and Myho's relationship. When you've seen the series more than once, you can really see the desperation and fear in Fakir's actions throughout the first few episodes.
I can ship pretty hard, myself, but I definitely feel what you mean about seeing people turn everything into romance. There are so many other fascinating ways characters can relate.
The Fakir/Mytho example is a good one, because when I watch the first few episodes I can definitely see why, watching them for the first time, it would be easy to latch onto tropes and find romance there. But looking at it that way is so much less interesting to me than considering the complex emotions and changing dynamics that are uncovered later. Same goes for Rue/Ahiru, really, though that pairing isn't as popular.
But of course interpretation is a highly personal thing.
Yeah, I have nothing against romance! I go nuts for certain ones. But there seems to be this overwhelming bias towards romance in a lot of ways, and that makes me sad and a little annoyed.
And yes, I totally recognize that there's a basis for it early on, but I just kind of...can't get why you would prefer it to what's developed later. It's one of my extremely few genuine fan pet peeves, though I usually keep it to myself so as not to stomp on other people's interpretations.
