I haven't read it in a really, really long time, but I recognized the first sentence. :P Same with Sabriel; I actually never even finished that one, but I plan to try to get ahold of it again sometime.

They are great first sentences! And obviously I believe that Sabriel is an amazing book. It's been a huge part of my life for...over half my life now. I love the world, the characters, the imagery, the themes... (Same with The Thief, actually!)
