Help, help! A great beast is pillaging the enchanted grove! You must come quickly!

I don't think I can properly express how deeply I fell in love with Rachel Cusk's The Country Life. I always finish truly great novels melodramatically -- with a lot of tears and a despairing "how will I ever read again?" I finished this one as I finished The Amber Spyglass and The Night Watch, by sobbing for a while. I knew I had to make dinner, ( Read more... )

Hey E. - in general how are wages in the UK vs wages in the US?

My impression is that they're generally a little lower, but that depends on where you live, of course. They're better in London, although London is so massively expensive that you would probably feel like you had even less.

Why do you ask? Are you planning on moving?

There's suddenly a bunch of buzz about a skills shortage in the UK (see links below.) I've always thought it might be nice to move there some day and perhaps work for Eidos in London, but the salaries sound very low in comparison to their American counterparts. I was wondering if it was a general trend, or specific to games and IT... A little of both it seems. A big "Myeh" at them ( ... )

Well, I can't speak to anyone else's feelings about this city, but even though when I'm away I often think that I'd love to live here, when I get here I always think, "Never." I would very much like to continue to visit as much as possible, and it's still my favorite city, but it seems like a very frustrating place to live. I continue to have mixed feelings about living here -- for all the frustration and stress, there are so many wonderful things, too. But the affordable living arrangements alone are rather devastating.

In a little over a week, I get to have a temporary kitty! I'm so excited. I hope it doesn't hate me.
