I'm back after a few weeks without internet access. We're moved into the new place and loving it. There are still boxes everywhere, but we're starting to figure out where things will go and the place is beginning to look like a real home. I met the neighbors across the street briefly when we first moved, they're our age and they seem very nice ( Read more... )

You, dear, need to send me your new phone number. Tried to call you the other day to check in, and was sad that your old number message didn't tell us what your new number was.

(Unless it was in one of the e-mails you sent out, and I missed it. Then I'll feel silly.)

Oh yeah, and I'm glad to hear you're settling in cozily.

And I feel you on the students. I'd want to fail them too. The sad thing is that from talking to my friends - some of whom are still IN college, and some of whom teach it, I wouldn't be so sure of your kids getting expelled if they pull this crap in college either. Is there any way to drive home the message by handing out zeros, but giving the kids a chance to redeem themselves (re-doing to assignment, or extra credit, or something like that)? Would any of them even bother?

Man, I would KICK Widget's ASS if she ever pulled shit like that, forget about coming for the blood of her teachers. I can't believe you have to put up with them blaming you for failing their kids for cheating, although I don't know why I'm surprised exactly.

Unbelievable!! If you don't want to fail them all, what if you threw the papers out and gave them an essay test to do in class? If anyone complains, give them the option of the zero instead.

And who does that kid think he is? Sounds like a James Spader character in an 80's teen drama. ;)

"Still, it would piss me off to see them all get away with it, esp. since if they pull that crap next year in college there will be no "well, I understand that you didn't mean to do it"."

Don't be so sure.

When students have cheated in my environmental science class, we've had the gamut of punishment. Right now, the most severe punishment I've seen is flunking my class, not getting expelled.

"he said, "just go ahead and try it. I won't be punished for not doing your inconsequential assignments.""

No, but maybe you should be slapped upside the head for disrespecting your teacher. Where do kids get off talking like that to their instructors?

I'm wondering how it would work to scrap the assignments and then pose another one but preface it with "There are few times you get a second chance as you gain more responsibility in the world-- I'm giving you one now but don't expect these every time you make bad decisions" kind of thing? They'd have to do more work and you'd have more reason to grade the way you want when you really did give them another chance- parents will need to respect that ( ... )
