ah, such a familiar story... our house's boiler died last winter, our first winter in the house. We nicknamed it Ol' Bess, and it was the original boiler. Cast-iron, it was originally coal fired and then converted to oil and then again converted to gas. The damn thing just cracked. We awoke one cold morning to our CO2 detector going off and an awful smell in the kitchen and basement.
We called NStar, who sent out a guy to assess the situation. Turns out we needed the whole thing removed (asbestos and all!). Luckily, we were considered an emergency and we had the old boiler removed and a new one installed and inspected in 36 hours. It cost us about $7K total iirc.
