Baby sleep - a gripe

I quite honestly don't understand the obsession in this country with infant sleep practices ( Read more... )

I don't mind Finn waking up at night, at least once, if not twice, as long as he is able to fall back asleep right away after being changed and having eaten. In fact, I find it absolutely normal!

It's the sleep-for-an-hour-then-be-up-for-an-hour-and-a-half-while-fussing that gets to be a drag... But again, nights like those are normal, too!

Some people just don't understand things that don't fall into neat categories and align perfectly with their schedules and ideas of what children should do/be. It's frustrating.

Heh - for the record, I don't relish her fussy-sleeper nights! I just try not to begrudge her them off-hand.

Also: Finn is so darn cute! :)

Awww, thanks. Unfortunately it's another every two hours night, now with an added Up For Two Hours At 4am bonus!

Do you think I should bring him in for an exchange? He's not acting right!

I'd say yes, but what if you traded him in and got stuck with an ooogly bee??

i can think of two reasons.
a lot of parents have the conception (valid or invalid) that their infant's sleeping habits are related to preventing SIDS. of course this is all theory and not proven. no one knows why SIDS happens or we would have fixed it. but sleeping habits are thought to be linked by SOME people and so paranoid parents freak out about it.
the other reason that makes sense to me is that some infants DO sleep through the night(i am married to a man who was one of those infants). and it isn't a matter of expectation, but
rather of hope. because since some parents do REALLY BADLY when they don't get enough sleep, they want to encourage their kids to as well. honestly fear of not sleeping enough is one of the reasons i'm not sure i want kids at all. i am a person who REALLY NEEDS sleep. if it's enough of a problem, i can see where these parents are coming from.
the thing where there is one or two nights though...? you're right. i don't get that at all. we all have nights like that - even adults. sounds normal to me.

Yeah, I don't get mad at my kids when they have a bad night (or are newborn and have many many many times of waking in the night...), but I do yell at God now and again...
I think the Great Almighty knows I can't handle much of the sleeplessness (in myself), so I've been blessed with "good" sleepers.

Oh, and as a side-note, they DO know what causes SIDS: it's a genetic condition that causes a baby to basically not react (e.g. turn their head/inhale) when there's a loss of oxygen flow. (Which is why toys/blankets/anything that can get around baby's air passages are a bad idea.) They are still learning about how this works, but hopefully someday soon all those old wives' tales can be put to rest!

Ugh, SIDS has got to be one of the most frightening things! I think that when Morgan moved out of the "high risk" age bracket I slept a lot better.

Back-to-Sleep has done a lot to reduce it. And the understanding of infant sleep apnea is growing, too.

Interestingly, I just read a study that postulates that when infants are brand-new, having frequent up and down sleep patterns are in part due to the infant's brain developing so quickly - all those periods of REM sleep are good for the baby!

As for casting one's eyes upward.. heh.. yeah, sometimes I think He could have thought some of this design through better.

(or, maybe we are pushing ourselves to live beyond what He designed us to be?)
