Ok, so it struck me that this has some application to the whole health care debate going on in our country right now. The issue has a whole spectrum of folks' opinions, but they range from one end, in which people basically see themselves as the authors of their own success, despite the health care system we have in place, to those who see ( Read more... )

I've had my own health insurance since I was 17. It sure came in handy during my pregnancy, and again 4yrs later for my daughter's near-life-threatening illness, and her smaller dental/medical procedure that same year. That is just the big stuff. It doesn't include perscription costs and various medical, dental, and vision appointments and small procedures ( ... )

Yeah, I've firmly believed for a long time that having or not having health insurance is just a choice people make, regardless of their income, perhaps with the exception of the truly poor and indigent, or folks who are refused coverage due to their health history (which is actually illegal in Idaho, but they just price you out of the market, instead). I see far too many of those who think they can't afford health insurance and want my tax dollars to pay for it who drive nicer cars than I do, put their kids in nicer clothes, buy them bigger toys, etc. Why should I subsidize under threat of force (taxation) their choices?

I just found a new way of looking at how the other side thinks, perhaps.
